I remember being a bit surprised when Spurs managed to sign Modric. He'd had an amazing season and been linked with Europe's elite before they went and got him.
Likewise with Loris, thought he'd go to a top club when he eventually left Lyon.

they were not, especially in comparison to the Italian giants like milan, inter, juve etc, but that's why he wanted to go there, almost single-handedly turned them into serie a winners for the first time in their history.

I remember reading that Steve Gibson sent his private jet to fly the white feather into a non-commercial airport. He was then chauffeured in Gibson's Bentley with instruction to the driver to take a very long route so to avoid all the shit hole areas of Middlesbrough when they were attempting to sign him.

I picked Ravanelli for my fantasy team, was over the moon with his hatrick vs Liverpool, I don't know how Middlesborough did sign him as he really was a top class player.
